Poor turnout for Car-Free Day

TORONTO, Ont. – A handful of people celebrated and many more drivers fumed, as a “Car-Free Day” event shut down Queen’s Park circle, Wednesday.

Drivers left idling in traffic wondered how the city could allow roads to be closed for something that had such little public support.

“Yah, it seems a little ridiculous, doesn’t it? But you know, people that organize these things don’t really think about the public – right? They just want to […] push forward there agendas. It’s terrible,” one motorist said.

But, councillor Kyle Rae said he does not have much sympathy for angry drivers.

“I say to them they’re selfish. They think that it’s all about them.”

Meantime, organizer Emma Caine, with the Sierra Club of Ontario, blamed the event’s low turnout on moving it to Queen’s Park for the first time and having only three weeks to plan it.

“If we had had more time […] we could of done more promotions, more advertisements – things like that to get people out.”

Organizers argued despite the weak attendance, thousands of people in the city parked the car and took transit, cycled or walked on Wednesday anyway.
