Marathon of Hope celebrates 30 years; Terry Fox’s former soccer coach speaks out

TORONTO, Ont. – Canadians are lacing up their sneakers for the 30th Annual Terry Fox Run held across the country, Sunday, and millions are expected to take part in this Marathon of Hope.

Bruce Moore has participated in all the runs held in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, Fox’s hometown.  Moore, Fox’s high school soccer coach, remembered the young athlete as passionate and persistent.

“He was an average kid who did extraordinary things. He was the Athlete of the Year, that year; he was on the basketball team; starter of the soccer team, and he also played a game of rugby in grade 12. He was just an all around good student,” he said. “He was really quiet, always the first kid on the field, last person off and lived by example instead of making a lot of noise.”

Moore, who was later diagnosed with cancer, believes Fox’s spirit will live on forever because of the cancer research funds and cancer awareness generated through his efforts.

The Annual Run in Canada is generally hosted on the second Sunday after Labour Day, the month chosen by Fox to reflect when he had to stop running and when Canadians had to start.

There are seven routes, with varying start times, for the Toronto runs. Visit the Terry Fox website for more information.
