Tampering of cans of baby formula in the Ottawa-area prompts warning

OTTAWA _ An infant became ill after consuming some powdered infant formula from a can that was tampered with, prompting a warning from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency late Friday.

A powder that appears to be flour was found in three cans of Nestle Good Start Iron Fortified Infant Formula, the CFIA said.

“The child had a reaction and of course children are very sensitive to the food source so there was a reaction,” said Garfield Balsom, a spokesman for the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. “There’s no hospitalization and the child is fine at this point.”

The matter has been referred to police as there is little doubt the cans were tampered with, said Balsom.

”The top seal was removed and the plastic (cap) put back on so there’s an obvious tampering issue,” he said in a phone interview.

The tampered cans were found in the Ottawa suburb of Nepean and it appears localized to that area, Balsom said.

Investigators did not have any inkling where the tampering might have occurred, Balsom added.

Consumers using powdered infant formula products should look under the plastic lid of the cans and ensure the metal/foil top is sealed properly.

The CFIA says the cans in question are 900g size with the following code: UPC: 0 65000 36614 3.
