Otttawa man arrested for domestic assault released on bail

OTTAWA, Ont.- An Ottawa man arrested on domestic assault charges after the R-C-M-P bugged his home as part of a wider terror investigation has been released on bail.

The R-C-M-P arrested the 20-year-old Ottawa man last week in connection with their year-long homegrown terror probe but he was never charged.

Instead, the call-centre worker was detained on domestic assault charges for allegedly shoving and threatening his wife in incidents in April and August.

Those matters came to the attention of police through their audio surveillance of their home.

The man’s lawyer questions why authorities took so long to charge his client with assault.

Richard Morris says police had been listening for months — and he questions how real they thought the danger was if they chose not to intervene.

Morris also says his client is “shocked and horrified” by his first brush with the justice system and didn’t see this coming.

Family members have posted bond for the man, who must stay away from his wife and cannot possess weapons or a passport.
