Police suspect speed and alcohol in fatal crash

TORONTO, Ont. – A man died and four other people were injured when two cars collided in a residential neighbourhood near Finch and Bathurst, at about 7 a.m. Saturday.

Tim Burrows of Toronto Police said a Chevy Malibu was travelling at a high rate of speed and drove through a stop sign. The Malibu was T-boned by a Dodge Caliber, hit a Hydro pole and a tree.

“It was a huge debris field. One of the cars looked like it had been through a war,” he said.

A 29-year-old man who was driving one of the cars is under arrest and police believe speed and alcohol were factors in the crash.

A passenger in the back seat was ejected from the car and died at the scene.

Two people in the second car – both in their sixties – suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
