Long weekend traffic underway

TORONTO, Ont. – The mass exodus has begun.

Not only are thousands of people heading out of Toronto, police said millions will be jamming into the city for Caribana.

The Ontario Provincial Police said this is a recipe for traffic chaos.

OPP Sgt. Dave Woodford called it a unique weekend, and told 680News that for the first time in years he was seeing bumper to bumper traffic on the way to the cottage on Friday.

He said he believes it may be a mix of the weather and a better economy.

But with confidence, comes cockiness, and Woodford said more drivers are using their cell phones behind the wheel.

“They seem to think that we forgot that this new law was in place regarding the electronic devices and the cell phones, and we’re seeing a lot of people on those,” Sgt. Woodford said.

The OPP will be cracking down on those not wearing seat belts, unsafe vehicles, as well as drinking and driving this weekend.

During the Canada Day weekend, OPP said 16 people died on Ontario highways, trails and waterways.
