Two TTC disruptions this week, no guarantee it won’t happen again

Two major subway service disruptions happened this week and TTC riders are asking today if it will happen again.

The entire subway system — Bloor-Danforth, Yonge-University-Spadina and Sheppard lines — was shut down Thursday morning because of a computer glitch.

The system was down for about 30 minutes, but the SRT line was not affected.

The same glitch also halted trains on the YUS line for a brief period during the evening rush hour on Tuesday.

Toronto Transit Commission spokesperson Brad Ross told 680News this type of computer problem is rare and shutting down the entire system is almost unheard of, but this morning there were safety issues.

“Where the trains crossover to another platform, those kind of switches are something that are control centre maintains and manages from the centre itself”, Ross explained. “When our computers can’t see those switches and can’t see those signals, then that’s a concern.”

Ross said they are looking into why TTC control has been failing, pointing out that both shutdowns this week were resolved within half an hour but he can’t guarantee it won’t happen again.

“I’m not going to speculate,” Ross said. “I mean it is technology and we need to keep an eye on it”

They’re investigating the computer failure and are hoping it wont happen again.

Track level fires actually cause the longest slowdowns on subway system, with over 1,200 minutes in delays reported each year.
