TTC to make its fare payment system more rider-friendly

TORONTO, Ont. – TTC riders could soon just swipe their debit or credit cards to pay for fares.

Transit officials told the Toronto Star the new payment system could be in place by 2011.

It would work alongside the province’s Presto smart card, which is a one-payment system for all GTA transit systems.

“Makes it a lot easier than having to scrounge for change every time you come, or having to go to an ATM and pulling out money just so that you can get on the subway,” one TTC rider told 680News.

The new fare system will be similar to those already in place in cities across United States and Europe.

TTC officials said the new fare system may allow for some riders to pay using their cell phones, as long as the phone has microchip technology.
