Ontario finance minister seeking to get wage freeze from public sector unions

TORONTO, Ont. – The Ontario government begins the difficult task of preparing its public sector unions and employers for a wage freeze, Tuesday.

Finance Minister Dwight Duncan will meet union leaders and employers who run institutions such as hospitals, schools and universities to talk about capping salaries.

About 350,000 non-unionized public-sector workers had their wages frozen in the March budget.

Duncan warned at the time that another 710,000 unionized workers would see their compensation frozen for two years after existing contracts expire.

Opposition Leader Tim Hudak said the government is facing a $19-billion deficit and must stick to its guns.

He said any public sector wage settlements must reflect the private sector’s ability to pay for them.
