One dead, others injured after fatal collision

TORONTO, Ont. – The westbound express lanes of the 401 have been reopened from Morningside to Warden after a fatal collision Friday night.

One person died after a tractor trailer slammed into a line of cars that had been stopped  by a construction crew.

In addition to the driver who was killed, Ontario Provincial Police’s constable Graham Williamson said others suffered major and minor injuries.

“One other occupant of the Tribute was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. The two other persons in the vehicle received minor injuries. The second vehicle to be struck [was a] Volkswagen Jetta. One occupant, a female driver, received serious but non-life-threatening injuries and a passenger, male, received no injuries,” he said.

This was the third major crash on the highway Friday.  A 37-year-old man was seriously injured when his convertible flipped over in the eastbound lanes near Meadowvale, and 11 others were injured in a multi-vehicle crash in the westbound lanes. These two crashes left lanes closed for much of Friday morning.
