Hundreds take to the streets asking for G20 public inquiry

TORONTO, Ont. –  About 1,000 protesters moved through Toronto’s downtown core today, making their way to the area that was fenced off during the G20 summit.

Protesters marched towards the Metro Toronto Convention Centre cheering, yelling and beating drums.

Upon reaching the intersection of Queen and Spadina, where police held a crowd for several hours in the pouring rain during the summit, protesters had a sit in, but got up and moved after about five minutes.

Earlier in the day, the group gathered for a peaceful rally outside the provincial legislature.

Provincial NDP leader Andrea Horwath addressed the boisterous crowd, to whistles and cheers as about 30 police officers on bikes and horses stood nearby.

The crowd erupted as Horwath said she was proud to be at the rally.

Many groups are calling for a public inquiry into police actions during the summit.

The route of the rally:

-Starting at Queen’s Park, then moving south along University Ave. to College
-Then west along College to Spadina Ave
-South on Spadina towards Queen, the location where police detained several hundred people during the summit
-East on Queen to Peter Street
-Then south along Peter to Front St
-The protesters will move west along Front to the CBC building. This may be the last stop.

In addition to this march, a rally protesting the treatment of animals following a ringworm outbreak at an OSPCA shelter in Newmarket is also taking place at Queen’s Park.
