Transit riders stay slim: New study

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – There’s yet another reason to expand TTC service in Toronto.

A new United States based study shows a good transit system helps people to stay slim.

Researchers looked at 500 people in Charlotte, North Carolina before and after the city completed a light rail transit system, and found the typical commuter who used the system to get to and from work lost an average of 6.5 pounds over a year to a year and a half.

In addition, those who used the light rail lines had an 81 percent lower risk of becoming obese.
