Survey shows most Canadians would invite Terry Fox to holiday BBQ

TORONTO, Ont. – If you could have any Canadian celebrity to a barbecue, living or dead, who would you invite?

The Historica-Dominion Institute posed that question to 1,000 Canadians ahead of Canada Day, and the results show that most Canadians would love to share hamburgers and hot dogs with a longtime Canadian hero whose memory is honoured every year.

38 percent of those polled would invite Terry Fox to their “Ultimate Canada Day BBQ”, while 35 percent would love to sit beside Wayne Gretzky.

Rounding out the most popular would-be guests are singer Celine Dion, environmentalist David Suzuki, and actor Mike Myers.

As for political favourites, over a quarter would love to invite former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, while the same amount would be delighted to have rocker Neil Young at their table.

Also high on the list were actor William Shatner, comedian Rick Mercer and iconic hockey star Maurice Richard.

The Canadians least likely to be invited to the ultimate barbecue, however, include former media baron Conrad Black, singing heartthrob Justin Bieber, and K’Naan of the “Waving Flag” song fame.

The survey asked Canadians to pick five names from a list of 30 choices.
