Road and water restrictions in Huntsville for G8

HUNTSVILLE, Ont. – Huntsville’s Deerhurst Resort is a no-go zone this week because of the upcoming G8 summit.

The resort is off limits to the general public starting Monday and all roads leading into the area will shut down as of Wednesday, including portions of Hwy. 60.

Local waterways are also restricted.

“You can’t canoe on Peninsula Lake. I don’t think you can swim more than 15 or 20 feet off your dock. They’ve got a number of military boats that are patrolling those lakes now,” said Steve Macalister, a local business owner.

The Integrated Security Unit has urged residents and tourists to avoid these areas. Local business owners must detour around a wide security perimeter.

However, despite the closures, business is booming in the Muskoka community.

Macalister says “[…] there’s an electric buzz of excitement and anticipation, and it’s amazing.”

The G8 summit starts on Thursday and the road restrictions will last until Monday.
