Billion-dollar summits price tag concern to most Canadians, poll shows

A new poll shows the billion-dollar security price tag of hosting the G8 and G20 summits is a concern to most Canadians.

But The Canadian Press Harris-Decima Poll says three quarters of the respondents say this week’s summits are important and worth the expense.

Some 76 per cent of respondents say the summits are either very or somewhat important, compared to 20 per cent who disagree.

The poll’s reading of the pulse of Canadians becomes more murky when looking at the 70 per cent of respondents who are familiar with the cost of holding the summits.

Of that group, 61 per cent said the summits were too expensive to be worth it while 32 per cent the costs are justified.

A total of one-thousand Canadians were questioned for the poll this month.

It’s considered accurate to within 3.1 percentage points, 19 times in 20.
