Use of Taser against Robert Dziekanski not justified, inquiry report concludes

VANCOUVER, B.C. – A public inquiry into Robert Dziekanski’s death has concluded the officers who confronted him at Vancouver’s airport were not justified in using their Taser.

Inquiry commissioner Thomas Braidwood said the officers could not have reasonably perceived Dziekanski was a threat when he picked up a stapler during their confrontation at Vancouver’s airport in October 2007.

He said their explanations for their use of force is a “patently unbelievable” rationalization after the fact.

The inquiry report makes eight recommendations, including an independent body to investigate the police in B.C. in serious cases.

Braidwood said Dziekanski’s death “shocked and repulsed” people all over the world.

The commissioner released an earlier report from another set of hearings that concluded the stun guns can kill and their use should be restricted.
