Father, son get life with no parole for 18 years Aqsa Parvez murder

BRAMPTON – A father and son who murdered their 16-year-old daughter and sister have been sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 18 years in a so-called honour killing.

Muhammad and Waqas Parvez pleaded guilty Tuesday in Brampton, Ont., to the second-degree murder of Aqsa Parvez.

In the weeks leading up to the 2007 killing, Aqsa had clashed with her family — originally from Pakistan — over her desire to shed the hijab, wear western clothing and have same freedoms as her friends.

She had been living with a friend in the weeks leading up to her death but was lured to the family home in Mississauga, Ont., by her brother who choked her to death after planning the slaying with his father.

A second-degree murder conviction carries an automatic life sentence and the judge has discretion to set the parole ineligibility at between 10 and 25 years.

Superior Court Justice Bruce Durno said all of the circumstances of this case including the “abhorrent” motivation of sparing the family perceived embarrassment meant their parole ineligibilities should be far higher than the minimum.
