General Electric recalls 33,000 front-loading washers in Canada

TORONTO, Ont. – General Electric is recalling about 33,000 front-loading washing machines in Canada due to a potential fire hazard.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission said anyone who has a washer with a model number starting with GBVH5 (followed by a serial number) should unplug it and call GE for a free repair.

A wire can break in the machine and make contact with a metal part on the washtub while the machine is operating, posing fire and shock hazards to consumers.

There have been seven such incidents reported in North America, one of which was in Canada. In that incident, flames escaped the unit and caused minor smoke damage. No injuries have been reported.

The washing machines were manufactured from December 2006 to February 1, 2010.

The models and serial numbers of the units involved are located on the bottom right side and on the bottom door frame of the washers.

The serial number affected begin with: AM, AR, AS, AT, DM, DR, DS, FM, FR, FS, GM, GR, GS, HM, HR, HS, LM, LR, LS, MM, MR, MS, RM, RR, RS, SM, SR, SS, TM, TR, TS, VM, VR, VS, ZL, ZM, ZR, ZS

For more information, consumers can call GE’s recall hotline at: 877-861-1315
