Fire in an abandoned building forces an evacuation in St. Catharines

ST. CATHARINES – An area of St. Catharines has been evacuated as a precaution due to a fire in an abandoned building.

The blaze broke out about 3 a.m., Sunday, in an abandoned building that used to be a metal fabricating plant and foundry.

Emergency services remain on scene.

The abandoned building continues to emit a large amount of smoke, that is being largely affected by strong winds.

Police warn that the smoke could affect area residents.

The evacuation of the area is anticipated to remain in effect into the early evening.

Police say anyone who chose to remain in their residence have been advised to close all windows and doors.

The area being evacuated is Berryman Avenue, between Queenston Street and Welland Avenue, and Vine Street South, between Queenston Street and Welland Avenue.
