Businesses assess ways to protect their employees during G20

TORONTO, Ont — Downtown businesses within the security zone for the upcoming G20 summit are being urged to fine-tune plans to keep their employees safe and their customers happy.

The vice-president of risk re-insurance at RSA Canada, Mike Wallace, said businesses must learn to properly serve their costumers during the summit. They need to make sure their employees are safe and in the loop about what’s happening.

“[Businesses should have a] hotline that they can phone in to any time and they can tell you whether or not the office is open…a business should be very transparent about what they’re doing,” he said.

Wallace also said businesses should not leave anything outside its building that could be used to damage property.

“Mailboxes, signs … those things can be picked up and thrown through the window,” he said.

He’s recommending businesses leave their lights on. This can help improve safety. He added, employees should also try not to stand out. Wallace suggests keeping office pass cards hidden in pockets instead of on belts or in purses.
