No plans to bring KFC’s Double Down sandwich to Canada

TORONTO – KFC’s bunless Double Down sandwich, made of two fried chicken breasts, bacon, two kinds of cheese and topped with sauce, has proved to be such a huge success in the U.S., that the fast food company has cancelled plans to take it off the menu and end its trial run.

However, we will not be seeing the wildly popular, yet highly caloric sandwich north of the border any time soon.

So far, ten million of the bunless sandwiches – which pack 540 calories, 1,380 milligrams of sodium and 23 grams of fat each – will have been sold across the United States by the end of May, said Javier Benito, KFC’s vice president of marketing and food innovation. The sandwich launched on April 12.

Benito referred to the sandwich as a social media phenomenon, which has spawned Twitter reviews and YouTube eating videos.

KFC Canada, franchised by Priszm Income Fund, makes its own product decisions, and has no plans to bring the sandwich to Canada. A company spokesperson said the Canadian side of the franchise closely monitors customer response to all international and U.S. product launches, and continuously evaluates any opportunities to test new menu items.
