Canadian Road and Safety Week kicks off with return to crash site

TORONTO – Two years after a deadly vehicle accident in the Eglinton East and Bermondsey Road area, the victims returned to the collision site, joining 54 division officers and members of M.A.D.D. Canada as part of the R.I.D.E. program.

On the evening of May 13 2008, Rehan Riaz, then aged 21, was driving westbound on Eglinton when his vehicle veered into the eastbound lanes and struck two oncoming vehicles, resulting in two deaths.

Riaz faced a total of 12 charges, including two counts of criminal neglience causing death, and two counts of impaired driving causing death.

As a result, Friday’s return to the collision site kicked off the Canada Road Safety Week. The campaign runs from next Tuesday through to Victoria Day.

Toronto Police are using this to encourage all drivers to obey the rules of the road in order to prevent similar tragedies.
