Toronto police officers to be equipped with microphones on uniforms

TORONTO, Ont. – Microphones will be added to the uniforms of front-line Toronto police officers to record their interactions with the public.

Toronto police said this is to ensure officer safety and accountability.

The microphones will be mounted directly on their uniforms.

The recorded conversations would then be sent wirelessly back to the police cruiser.

Some people 680News spoke to were concerned this could impact on their privacy, but others said they like this technology.

“I think it’s a good idea that the police officers will have the conversations recorded, just for everybody’s sake, both the public as well as for the officers,” one woman said.

The National Post reported officers will be able to activate these microphones anytime they feel an interaction with the public is worth recording.
