Hundreds of police gather to honour fallen comrades

TORONTO – Hundreds of police officers from across Ontario attended ceremonies at Queen’s Park to honour their fallen comrades.

Premier Dalton McGuinty presented plaques to the families of four officers who have died in the past year to start the annual day of remembrance.

Peel Regional Constable James Ochakovsky and OPP Constable Vu Pham both died earlier this year.

OPP Constable Alan Hack and Ottawa Constable Eric Czapnik died in 2009.

The names of the four officers and that of RCMP Chief Superintendent Douglas Coates were added to the Ontario Police Memorial at Queen’s Park – bringing the total to 241 names.

Coates was serving as part of the UN peacekeeping mission in Haiti and died as a result of the earthquake in January.
