Montreal Canadiens head to second round of Stanley Cup playoffs

MONTREAL, Que. – There was a large and loud street party in downtown Montreal last night after the Canadiens advanced to the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

The Canadiens beat the Capitals in Washington 2-1 in Game-7 of their opening round series.

When the game finished, several thousand people poured into the intersection of Peel and Ste-Catherine Streets in downtown Montreal to celebrate.

Riot-equipped police let the party go on for about two hours before breaking it up.

Reports said at least three arrests were made, some beer bottles were tossed at police, and two tear gas canisters went off.

There was no major vandalism against businesses in the area.

Canadiens fans were extra jubilant Wednesday night because their team scored a major upset.

Montreal entered the playoffs seeded eighth in the East, while the heavily-favoured Capitals had the NHL’s best record in the regular season.
