More than 7,200 charges laid in spring seatbelt campaign on Ontario highways

TORONTO, Ont. – The latest crackdown on seatbelt use on Ontario roads resulted in more than 7,200 charges laid by Ontario Provincial Police in just 10 days.

That was out of 996,316 vehicles checked during the campaign, which ran from April 14 to 24.

The bulk of the charges, 5,611, were laid against drivers for not buckling up and another 1,523 passengers were charged for not being strapped in.

A further 132 charges were laid for improperly installed child seats.

During the course of the annual crackdown, one person died and 41 people who were not buckled in were injured in collisions.

During the 2009 campaign, provincial police checked 1,072,003 vehicles and laid a total of 10,592
charges.

“There are still too many people taking needless risks with their lives by not taking the simplest and most effective of safety precautions and buckling up,” said deputy police commissioner Larry Beechey.

“I am encouraged to see that even though we checked about the same number of vehicles this year compared to last year, the number of charges laid this year was almost half.”
