Fire damages plaza in Waterloo

WATERLOO, Ont. – A massive fire destroyed a strip plaza near the University of Waterloo campus, Thursday.

The fire broke out at about 5:30 a.m.

Eight businesses, including restaurants, were affected by the blaze, leaving more than 100 people without a place to work.

The fire led to the evacuation of homes along Lester Street and University Avenue. Some roads near the University of Waterloo campus were closed.

Three aerial units were used to fight the blaze, which was brought under control by firefighters.

Damage to the plaza is estimated to be in the millions of dollars.

No injuries have been reported.

The cause of the fire is not yet known, but it seems there was no working sprinkler system in the building.
