Mayor Miller uses TTC to send message about provincial transit funding

TORONTO, Ont. – A message by Mayor David Miller is currently running repeatedly on the TTC public address system, urging riders to get involved in the battle for provincial transit funding.

The 30 second public announcement runs every 12 minutes from April 15 until April 18.

Despite being a captive underground audience, many riders told 680News, they just are not listening.

One rider said that she had her iPod on while she waited to the subway and although she could hear Miller’s voice over the announcement, she did not hear what he was saying.

That is better than the number of riders who claimed they had no heard the message at all.

However, one rider told 680News, she heard what Miller had to say and had a message for him of her own, “They just decided to spend $42-million rebeautifying Nathan Phillips Square.  That’s not going to make any money.  They should put that money into the TTC.”

Stuart Green, from with the mayor’s office, told 680News the announcement is a cost-free way for the mayor to communicate directly with riders.

“We want them to be engaged, we want people to understand and to call the premier and the MPP and say we need this funding back” said Green.

The province has postponed $4-billion in funding, a move that the mayor says threatens the future of the transit city plan.

“Save Transit City” posters are expected to begin appearing system wide, Friday.
