Ontario Power will cost 11.6 percent more in 2011

Residential electricity bills in Ontario are going to be hiked by 11.6 percent as of next year.

Hydro One was given approval on Friday, to raise its distribution rates on May 1, and then again on New Years Day 2011.

The increase residents will face in May will be more than eight percent of the total fare hike.

The utility company estimated the increase will add $4.25 a month to a typical residential customer this year, and an additional $1.30 next year.

They have said that the extra money is needed to maintain and repair existing equipment as well as expand the system, which currently covers about three quarters of the province.
