Cops find explosives and weapons in east-end storage locker

TORONTO, Ont. – Police recovered explosives and a cache of weapons inside a storage unit in Scarborough, Wednesday.

The explosives, which weighed a couple pounds, were transported to the Leslie Street spit where it was safely detonated.

Residents who live within a few kilometres of the Leslie Street Spit in the Toronto Portlands said they heard an explosion around 11 p.m. Wednesday, and felt their houses shake.

Toronto police closed major streets and parts of the Don Valley Parkway and Gardiner Expressway as a reinforced trailer and a convoy including police, ambulance and fire vehicles transported the explosive substance.

The discovery of the explosives and weapons was made just before 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday after police executed a search warrant at a storage unit near Progress and Kennedy avenues.

As a precaution, the entire Scarborough Rapid Transit line was shutdown for about an hour as police investigated.

It is unclear what led police to the east-end storage unit.

There has been no word on arrests made in connection to the explosives or weapons.
