Classmates grieve for victim of Oshawa stabbing, suspect charged

OSHAWA, Ont. – Grief counsellors were at an Oshawa high school, Wednesday, after 16-year-old Mike McDonald was stabbed to death Tuesday afternoon at a bus shelter near the school.

McDonald was stabbed during a fight at a bus stop at Rossland and Stevenson roads, near Monsignor Paul Dwyer Catholic High School, Tuesday. He died in hospital.

Jacques Amakon, 18, has been charged with second-degree murder. Amakon also faces a dangerous-weapons charge.

Both McDonald and Amakon were students at the school.

Students dropped off flowers, candles and messages at the bus shelter, where a makeshift memorial stood early Wednesday.

Students described McDonald, also known as “biggie,” as a star football player and a great friend.

Emotional students who descended on the bus stop Wednesday morning comforted one another.

“His nature was nothing like violent, he was more of a gentle giant if anything,” one student said.

“He was like a teddy bear to everyone. He would always try to do everything for everyone else,” another said.

Police said the victim and the suspect had an ongoing dispute and had fought each other before.

A number of students witnessed the fight and watched in horror as McDonald was stabbed several times.

Police were looking for a knife used in the attack, described as a kitchen or steak knife. They allege the accused had a knife when he walked away from the altercation but did not have it when he was arrested.

This was Durham’s fourth homicide of the year.
