TORONTO, Ont. – The Ontario Power Authority wants people in the province to help fight phantom power — the power that is wasted by home electronics and appliances even when they are turned off.
The OPA said phantom power costs the average Ontario household as much as 15 per cent of their annual electricity costs, which is up to $100 a year for a house using 1,000 kilowatt-hours a month.
The Power Authority said people can reduce the amount of phantom power by plugging electronics and appliances into automatic shut-off power bars.
Others ways to conserve energy and save money include:
– Replacing one old kitchen appliance with an energy star-rated appliance
– Eliminating second refrigerator
– Using cold water for washing clothes and a clothesline for drying
– Installing a programmable thermostat and setting it two degrees above/below normal temperature
