Men charged with stealing jewelry from hospitals in protective custody

TORONTO, Ont. – Two men charged in connection with a seven-month robbery spree of patients at nine GTA hospitals are being held in protective custody in jail as they await trial.

29-year-old Isaac Lemkowicz, of Toronto, and 26-year-old Marcos Marinoni, of Vaughan, made brief appearances at College Park court and were remanded until Wednesday to set a court date by video.

The men are being held separately from the other prisoners to protect them from other inmates who would be angered that they would allegedly steal from a dying woman.

Police tell the Toronto Sun there were more than 20 victims from nine GTA hospitals and they allege the men prowled maternity and palliative care units stealing purses and credit cards.

The two suspects were initially arrested after $7000 worth of jewelry was taken from an 83-year-old woman dying of cancer.

The suspects are also accused of the theft of a $9000 engagement ring from a jewelry store at Sheridan Mall. They face 237 charges stemming from theft.
