TDSB considers opening four new speciality schools

TORONTO, Ont. – A plan to open new speciality schools is currently being considered by the Toronto District School Board.

According to the Toronto Star, the TDSB will discuss whether they should start construction on the four schools – one for boys, one for girls, a choir school and a sports academy – in an attempt to curb a decline in enrolment and offer students more choice.

The move was kick-started by the new director of education Chris Spence, who opened a sports academy and two all-boy programs in Hamilton, where he was director until last July.

The proposal, however, is bound to spark debate about whether specialty schools, especially single-sex programs, result in social segregation when it comes before a school board committee next week.

This fall Spence had proposed an all-boys’ academy; but, it was scrapped after many trustees voiced their concerns about the possible negative implications of separating children by gender.
