TTC votes to install suicide prevention screens at some subway stations

TORONTO, Ont. – The Toronto Transit Commission has decided to take steps to begin to reduce the number of suicides and attempted suicides on the subway.

One step would include installing suicide screens at some subway platforms. The barriers would block access to the tracks by staying closed until the train comes to a complete stop.

The TTC, under pressure to deal with the tragic death toll on its tracks, voted Wednesday to include funding for platform screen doors in its 2011-2015 capital budget.

The screens would be installed on the Yonge-University-Spadina line first, as early as 2013.

Subway stations between Eglinton and Union would be first in line for the barriers.

It may take up to six years to outfit the entire Yonge-University-Spadina line.

It’s not yet known as to if and when the suicide prevention doors would be installed on the Bloor-Danforth line.

It would cost about $700-million to install the life-saving barriers across the entire subway system.
