Hate crimes in Peel grow almost three-fold over a year

BRAMPTON, Ont. – The number of hate crimes has almost tripled in Peel in one year, a preview of Peel Regional Police’s annual report revealed, Wednesday.

The cases have grown from 37 in 2008 to 95 cases in 2009.

The majority of cases are graffiti on property.

Police said the increase may be due to the continued growth in population, for both Brampton and Mississauga, which means a natural increase in calls for police.

In summary:

– The number of hate/bias motivated incidents has increased from 37 incidents in 2008 to 95 incidents in 2009.

– The number of individuals charged or cautioned increased from one in 2008 to five in 2009.

– The majority of hate/bias motivated crimes consisted of vandalism to property – in the form of graffiti. Of the 95 reported incidents, 66 incidents consisted of complaints of graffiti.
