Teen charged after small explosive device goes off in Oshawa, Ont., hits house

OSHAWA, Ont. – A 17-year-old youth has been charged with mischief after a homemade explosive device made of firecrackers exploded and started a small fire in a neighbour’s home.

Durham region police say the device exploded in the teen’s backyard and travelled through a fence and into the neighbour’s house through a window. It started a smoldering fire but damage was limited to one room.

Police say the teen made two such devices and the street was sealed off while the second one was disabled safely. Damage was minimal and no injuries were reported.

The devices were described as firecrackers bound together and placed in a tube.

The teen has been charged with mischief endangering life, possession of an incendiary device and using an explosive device.

He was released into the care of his family with a future court date.
