Two pedestrians struck at Yonge and Maitland

TORONTO, Ont. – A 77 year old couple is in critical condition in hospital after being hit by a produce van on Yonge Street at Maitland Street, just south of Wellesley, Monday afternoon.

Mark, a witness, said the full weight of the Ford Cube van rolled onto the elderly couple, and they became pinned underneath. He held their hands and tried to calm them as fire arrived on the scene.

An EMS worker said it took 15 minutes to extract the pair from underneath the vehicle.

The pair suffered serious head injuries, as well as several broken bones.

Toronto Police Constable Hugh Smith said the 49-year-old driver of the van, who is from Toronto, was “quite shaken.”

Smith added that this incident is part of a bigger pedestrian problem, as nine pedestrian fatalities have been recorded in Toronto so far in 2010, a total three times higher than last year to date.

Police are continuing their investigation and are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.
