Canadian Booksellers ask Federal Government to reject Amazon bid

TORONTO – The Canadian Booksellers Association has asked the Federal Government to reject a bid by Amazon to establish roots in Canada.

Association president Stephen Cribar has told James Moore, Canada’s heritage minister, that allowing Amazon into Canada would not be in the best interests of Canadian culture.

Cribar has said “to allow Amazon to enter the Canadian marketplace will detrimentally affect independent businesses and would raise serious concerns over the protection of our cultural industries”

He wrote that the promotion of Canadian authors and culture within Canada’s bookstores are “values that no American dot.com retailer could ever purport to understand or promote.”
