Councillors to prove freebies good for the city

Toronto city councillors may lose the free from their freebies.

To avoid being taxed on them, The Globe and Mail has reported councillors will have to prove to Revenue Canada the free golf, transit and zoo passes benefit the city more than the politicians who get them.

A Revenue Canada audit determined the passes should be taxable benefits and last month, councillors received an assessment informing them they’re expected to pay retroactively.

The city is appealing the ruling.
