NHL trade deadline set for 3 p.m. Wednesday

TORONTO, Ont. – It’s NHL trade deadline day, Wednesday, and while it’s a great day for hockey fans, it can be nerve-wracking for the players.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have already sent Alexei Ponikarovsky to the Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins, and in return got defenceman Martin Skoula and hometown prospect Luca Caputi.

Sportsnet hockeycentral analyst Nick Kypreos said Caputi, a 21-year-old from Toronto, could be a good get.

“Big, strong guy […] they think he’s tough to play against,” Kypreos said.

The last time the Leafs were in the playoffs was 2004, and are currently the second worst team in the NHL.

In terms of what lies ahead, former Leafs general manager and FAN 590 morning host Gord Stellick said fans won’t likely see anything like that huge seven-player deal before the Vancouver Olympics.

But Wayne Primeau, Lee Stempniak and Tomas Kaberle could be on the way out.
