Oakville and Mississauga residents rally against building of power plant

TORONTO, Ont. – Hundreds of Oakville and Mississauga residents protested at Queen’s Park, Tuesday, calling on the province to pull the plug on a proposed power plant in their neighbourhood.

Oakville Mayor Rob Burton joined the group outside the legislature.

The protesters, who were chanting, “It’s not fair, we want clean air,” insisted it’s not just a ‘not-in-my-backyard’ situation.

They said the proposed plant, located next to the Ford plant in Oakville, would add to already high levels of pollution in the neighbourhood and put the health and safety of the community at risk.

The residents said there are better locations in the province for such a plant, arguing the current site is just too close to homes, schools and businesses.
