Athletes feel incredible pressure to own the podium

WHISTLER, B.C. – The Olympic way is Higher, Stronger, Faster. But for a growing number of Canadian athletes, the 2010 Winter Games have spawned a new credo of Anxious, Sadder, Sorrier.
Sorry for missing out on the medals. Sorry for making that one wrong move that led to a bad result. Sorry for letting the country down and not owning the podium. We saw it when freestyle skier Jennifer Heil won a silver medal and held back the tears because she had so badly wanted to produce the country’s first gold.
We saw it when a distraught Mellisa Hollingsworth finished fifth in skeleton and essentially apologized for not delivering a medal that once seemed so certain.
