Smitherman announces adoption of baby boy

Toronto mayoral candidate and former Ontario cabinet minister George Smitherman says he’s got the go-ahead to adopt a baby boy.

The openly gay politician says he and his partner Christopher’s attempt to adopt was approved in principle by the Toronto Children’s Aid Society.

Smitherman issued a press release saying the process takes a minimum of six months.

The adoption isn’t final until the new parents and child have gotten to know each other and authorities have determined the child’s needs are being met.

The overjoyed couple has requested privacy during the difficult legal process.
