Police warn of an increase in theft from vehicles

Toronto Police are warning the public of an increase in thefts from vehicles after noticing a significant increase in the theft of GPS units.

Police call this kind of theft a crime of opportunity and advise drivers to take precautions to protect personal belongings.

Some tips for deterring theft are keeping your belongings out of plain sight, remembering to lock vehicle doors, putting purchases in the trunk of the car instead of the back seat, and removing electronic devices and their accessories when leaving the vehicle.

Police also advise drivers to not set the GPS “home” address button to an exact address, but rather to program in a familiar intersection or place of business near by, to avoid giving away too much information to vehicle thieves.
