Snowmobile crash leads to third death within three days in Central Ontario

A 57 year old man has died following a snowmobile crash in Oro-Medonte township, north of Barrie, after hitting a tree.

Just after 2:30 Saturday afternoon, OPP officers from several different detachments were called to Cassell Drive in Oro-Medonte, where they found the man with serious and life threatening injuries.

He was transported to hospital in Barrie, where was pronounced dead.

The man’s death is the third fatality involving a snowmobile in less than three days in Central Ontario.

OPP Constable Peter Leon tells 680News the mild temperatures and lack of snow is leading to less than favourable conditions for winter enthusiasts. As a result, police are encouraging snowmobilers to drive according to their ability, the trail conditions and within the posted speed limit on area trails.

Inexperience may be a factor in the latest crash.

Police have not yet released the name of the 57 year old man. An autopsy is scheduled for Sunday.
