Samsung deal worth $7-billion to make Ontario leader in green technology, McGuinty says

Premier Dalton McGuinty said Samsung’s $7-billion investment in Ontario will help the province become a leader in manufacturing green energy technologies it can export to the U.S. and elsewhere.

McGuinty said the Samsung wind and solar projects will allow the province to start a “cluster” of green energy companies to develop the new technology and expertise.

He said the largest deal of its kind in the world is expected to help create 16,000 jobs over next six years and will “make Ontario the place for green energy manufacturing in North America.”

McGuinty, who is signing the deal with Samsung Thursday, called it a giant step forward towards a greener economy.

Critics said the deal gives a foreign consortium an unfair advantage over local wind and solar producers.

The Opposition said it wants the provincial auditor general to investigate the Samsung agreement to make sure taxpayers are getting a good deal.
