McGuinty announces green deal with Samsung

Premier Dalton McGuinty announced, Thursday, a $7-billion green energy deal between the province and Samsung.

The South Korean electronics giant plans to build wind and solar farms across Ontario with enough energy to power over half a million homes.

Premier McGuinty said the agreement is about looking toward the future.

“We’re getting Ontario ready for a carbon constrained world.  It’s going to become more expensive for us to use energy from gas and coal.  It’s our responsibility to get province ready for the green economy.” according to McGuinty.

But NDP energy critic Peter Tabuns said the green deal is far from “clean” because it favours foreign companies over local producers.

‘This company has been allowed to jump the cue ahead everyone else, with a promise to build in the future.  There is not a guarantee” said Tabuns.

Four manufacturing plants will also open, creating 16-thousand jobs over six years.

Ontario hopes to close its coal-powered plants by the end of 2014.
