Premier Dalton McGuinty gets rid of stand-alone Minister of Aboriginal Affair, called ‘a step backward’

Premier McGuinty’s decision to get rid of a stand-alone minister of aboriginal affairs is being called a step backwards by an aboriginal leader.

Nishnawbe Aski Nation Grand Chief Stan Beardy says he’s disappointed that McGuinty doesn’t think aboriginal issues are worthy of having a stand-alone minister.

Chris Bentley took on the responsibility for aboriginal affairs in yesterday’s cabinet shuffle, along with his duties as attorney general.

A separate minister for aboriginal affairs was a key recommendation of the inquiry report into a fatal shooting of a native protester at Ipperwash Provincial Park.
