Montreal-based company with operations in Haiti assesses damage

Haiti is the largest beneficiary of Canadian development assistance in the Americas, and Canadian businesses with dealings in Haiti are now reaching out to the earthquake-ravaged country.

Canada exported $39-million worth of goods to Haiti in 2009 and imported $20-million, mostly in textiles.

Also, notable Canadian business with operations in Haiti, T-shirt maker Gildan Activewear, said it is “concerned” for the well-being of the people in Haiti and wants to help provide humanitarian aid to the country.

The Montreal-based company uses Haitian workers to sew some of its fabrics produced in the Dominican Republic.

It told The Globe and Mail it is still gathering information “in order to fully evaluate the impact of the Haiti earthquake on the operations and employees of its sub-contractors in the country.”

Gildan’s management said it is “committed to playing a leadership role in efforts to provide humanitarian aid to the country.”
